"The Functional Medicine model is an individualized, [client]-centered, science-based approach that empowers [clients] and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and [to] promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each [client's] genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved [client] outcomes.
"By addressing root cause, rather than symptoms, practitioners become oriented to identifying the complexity of disease. They may find [that] one condition has many different causes and, likewise, [that] one cause may result in many different conditions. As a result, Functional Medicine treatment targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual."--The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM)
Dr. Her does not offer Primary Care services. Accordingly, it is vitally important that you maintain your relationship with your Primary Care Provider (PCP) to manage any active medical concerns and to address routine health maintenance recommendations. If you feel that you are in need of emergency care, you must call 911
While everyone is unique, many clients who may benefit from Functional Medicine include those with chronic conditions such as weight gain and the inability to lose weight, fatigue, depression and other mood imbalances, digestive disturbances, and hormone imbalances just to name a few.
Clients will vary in the diversity and the degree of severity of their chronic conditions, yet, Functional Medicine focuses on identifying and treating common root causes that have resulted in what appear to be very different and distinct conditions.
Dr. Cheng also offers Functional Medicine for those who want to improve upon their current state of relative good health and also for athletes who seek to achieve optimal performance and to accelerate their recovery from training and any potential training-related challenges.
Dr. Cheng's approach to Functional Medicine is derived from studying under, and working closely with, Dr. Dan Kalish of the Kalish Institute of Functional Medicine. The success of this particular approach to the practice of Functional Medicine is founded on the scientific information (data) derived from laboratory testing that identifies specific dysfunction and imbalance of three (3) core (and fundamentally critical) body systems. These laboratory tests, which may include saliva, urine, stool, and, much less frequently, blood testing (finger prick or blood draw), are the basis for identifying your unique deficiences and toxicities in order to better afford you success in the shortest period of time
Results vary from client to client. However, some clients realize dramatic improvement within the first month while others may take longer. Standard wellness programs and supplement protocols designed by Dr. Cheng are at least six (6) months in length.
For many clients, their current chronic health condition has developed over a period of time and reflects the dysfunction that has arisen from many months to years of cumulative compromises in their health. Quite commonly, many are able to identify an event or experience that seemed to ultimately push them further in to their current and chronic state of poor health.
Accordingly, it requires an appropriate amount of time to restore and to stablize the ideal state of health for any given client. Observationally speaking and, for the truly dedicated Functional Medicine client, it takes about one (1) month of recovery and repair for each year that that client has endured a specific chronic health condition
